Janesville Resident Honored With Award Winnetka, IL? On October 12, 2006 The Hadley School for the Blind presented Donna M. Thompson, of Janesville, Wis., with the Donald Wing Hathaway Lifelong Learning Award. Each year, Hadley instructors nominate students most deserving of this honor. “I have learned so much throughout my adult years that would not have been possible without the Hadley School,” Donna said. “Over the years as a student, Hadley instructors have made me feel that I have a lot of potential. Hadley instructors are not only committed to what they do but really love what they do.” Blind since birth, Donna has successfully completed 57 courses since enrolling with Hadley in 1973. She has completed courses like “Abacus 1,” “Medical Terminology,” “General Science,” “Essentials of English” and “Personal Psychology.” The Hadley School, founded in 1920, is the nation’s largest distance education school for people who are visually impaired. “I first heard about the Hadley School through a braille magazine,” she said. “As I read about the opportunities available to me at Hadley, I knew I wanted to further my education. Hadley instructors helped me believe that I have a lot of potential. They are not only committed to what they do, but really love what they do.” Donna plans on taking more courses in the near future. The award is presented annually to the student who most typifies Hadley standards of significant achievement in courses completed with distinction over a number of years, and who uses Hadley courses for self-improvement as a means to contribute to society and his or her community.
