Tucker Resident Honored With Award Winnetka, IL? On October 12, 2006 The Hadley School for the Blind presented Stephanie Kieszak-Holloway, of Tucker, Ga., with the Robert J. Winn Family Education Award. Each year, Hadley instructors nominate students most deserving of this honor. “The uncertainty of not knowing any blind adults and the expectations for a blind person was challenging,” Stephanie said. “It didn’t know what to expect for her. Now I don’t have those same questions anymore. It’s more like how do we do this not can it be done.” With a six-year-old daughter Kendra who is visually impaired, Stephanie enrolled with Hadley in 2003 so she could provide her daughter the best support possible. Since enrolling she has successfully completed four courses including “Child Development,” “Learning Through Play” and “Reach Out and Teach.” The Hadley School, founded in 1920, is the nation’s largest distance education school for people who are visually impaired. Stephanie is a full-time mother of two children and appreciates the flexibility of Hadley courses. She also works as a biostatistician for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is president of the Georgia Organization of Parents of Blind Children. She says that Hadley gave her the challenge and encouragement she needed to reorganize her life and make adjustments to her daughter’s blindness. She plans on taking more Hadley courses in the near future. This award is presented annually to the parent or caregiver who most typifies Hadley standards of significant achievements in completing courses in our Family Education Program. This person has demonstrated the knowledge gained from Hadley courses and applied their experiences to their unique family situations or community or society at large.
