Spokane Resident Honored With Award Winnetka, IL? On October 12, 2006 The Hadley School for the Blind presented Dannie D. Hawley of Spokane, Wash., with the 2006 Student of the Year Award. Each year, Hadley instructors nominate students most deserving of this honor. “I would say that, in large part, Hadley has given me a huge part of my life back,” Hawley said. “Hadley instructors have made a world of difference in my life too. Their understanding, patience and attitude have been such a blessing to me. They have expanded my vision for how I might use braille.” Dannie enrolled with Hadley in 2004 and has since successfully completed 18 courses, mastering subjects like word processing, foods, braille literacy and living independently. The Hadley School, founded in 1920, is the nation’s largest distance education school for people who are visually impaired. “Before Hadley, I was the ‘cook’s helper’ and never ventured more than to slice up cucumbers, etc. Then came the Food Series and now I am the chief cook and a “food consultant” to the other missionaries. Dannie says that Hadley courses have helped her understand the various eye conditions she encountered recently in Africa. She plans on taking more Hadley courses in the near future. The Hadley Student of the Year Award is presented annually to the student who most typifies Hadley standards of significant achievements in courses completed with distinction. It is important that the student uses the courses for self-improvement as well.
